What is Podiatric Medicine?

Podiatric Medicine is the branch of medicine dealing with problems of the foot, ankle and lower leg. This includes everything from nail problems to ankle fractures and lower leg ulcers. Other common examples of problems treated by podiatric physicians include bunion deformities, ingrown nails, heel pain, calluses, and care of various diabetic foot problems.

Podiatry is a branch of allopathic medicine. This is defined as the study of diseases and their treatment through medicinal, surgical and physical means. Allopathic medicine is the type employed by an internal medicine physician, a cardiologist, as well as your family doctor.

Education for a podiatric physician is similar to that of a family practice doctor. Each undergoes four years of medical school after obtaining an undergraduate degree (ie a college degree). Like your family doctor, a podiatrist follows medical school with a residency program which can last anywhere from two to four years.
